July: Truly ‘Unico’ Wines!
For July’s Wine of the Month we are delighted to select two wonderful ‘Unico’ wines from the Rioja Alta region of Northern Spain both of which are produced by the Urbina family. Pedro Urbina Jnr makes traditional, hand crafted wines using his finest Tempranillo grapes and a mixture of French and, American Oak barrels.
The first wine is the 1999 ‘Unico’ Seleccion. This wine has had 18 months in barrel and over 10 years in bottle producing a mature and elegant Rioja. Very aromatic, fragrant with a lovely explosion of berries, damsons and figs this is a great summer wine and perfect with lamb. At £299 for 12 bottles this is truly amazing value. Highly recommended.
The second wine is the Godfather of the Urbina range, the 1996 Gran Reserva ‘Unico’ which has 4 years in French barrel and 12 years in bottle. 1996 is considered by connoisseurs as one of the greatest vintages of the century, giving this wine more richness, intensity and a beautiful concentration of mature fruits. At £450 for 12 bottles we encourage you to order this truly special wine whilst stocks last.
