After 44 years at the helm of Charles Mitchell Wines, co-founders Christopher Mitchell Pacey and Howard Charles Domney have officially hung up their leather aprons, bringing a remarkable era of fine wine expertise and passionate service to a close.
Founded in 1981, Charles Mitchell Wines quickly earned its reputation as a trusted independent wine merchant, known for sourcing outstanding wines from both renowned estates and hidden gems across Europe and the New World. Over the decades, Chris and Howard built a loyal following of discerning clients who valued not only the quality of the wines but also the warm, personal service that defined the brand.
As the cork gently pops on this new chapter, we are delighted to introduce the new custodians of Charles Mitchell Wines: Steven and Claire Scorer-Murtagh.
Long-time friends of the business and passionate wine lovers themselves, Steven and Claire are no strangers to the world of wine. For the past 15 years, they’ve been running Jean Juviniere, a respected, family-run fine wine business in Glossop, Derbyshire, originally founded in 1978 by Claire’s father, Ron Scorer. The business has earned a strong reputation for its carefully curated range of over 900 wines and exceptional client service – qualities that mirror the ethos of Charles Mitchell Wines beautifully.
Together, Steven and Claire will be blending the best of both businesses – preserving the boutique producers, trusted relationships, and bespoke wine experiences that Charles Mitchell Wines is known for, while introducing exciting new additions and gifting options from Jean Juviniere’s extensive portfolio.
As Steven puts it, “We feel incredibly honoured to take on the legacy that Chris and Howard have built. Charles Mitchell Wines is a business with heart, heritage and a deep respect for quality – values that align perfectly with our own.”
Claire adds, “Our aim is to keep everything that clients already love about Charles Mitchell – and simply add to the experience with even more choice, flexibility and new ways to enjoy exceptional wine.”
